How to get rid of belly bloating - 6 remedies + bonus tip

‘Omg, you’re pregnant, and you didn’t tell me? Congratulations Char!’ Oops, awkward… ‘Nope, just a food baby’ I need to answer. Do you know this feeling? I certainly do… Yeap, food babies ain’t that cute. But what can you do about a bloated belly? Or is it better to ask; what can you do to prevent it?

When you feel bloated, your body actually wants to tell you something. If it had a voice it would say (or maybe even scream!) HEY, SOMETHING HERE IS SOMETHING OUT OF BALANCE! You can ignore this and think like ‘oh whatever, that’s just the way it is, I always feel bloated,’ or you can do something about it. You can choose to unravel the problem AK the challenge.

Belly bloating can have many different causes. Today we explain you the most common ones.

1. Eating too quickly / large portions

We get it. You were hungry, looked forward to this Burrito meal for hours and then it’s suddenly there. But then, boom bang, gone in 10 minutes. Wow, how did that happen…? When we feel hungry, we often can’t wait for the food and want to eat it RIGHT NOW and therefore also overeat. However, this is not healthy at all. When we eat too fast, we swallow a lot of air at the same time; this air accumulates in the belly, which results in you feeling bloated. Besides that, to feel satiated, you have to wait 20 minutes. The case is though that we often tend to eat a lot more than we need within those 20 minutes; simply because we are not aware of the fact that we are already full. Our advice: chew your food 20 times. By doing this, you eat more slowly. By eating slower, you will on time be aware of when you are full and therefore eat less – and thus won’t feel bloated.

2. Avoid carbonated drinks

Carbonated drinks contain a large amount of carbon dioxide.
When you take such a drink, you also swallow a lot of carbon dioxide. The gas gets easily stuck in the digestive system. This makes you feel bloated and can even cause cramps.

Make sure to drink enough though. Drink around 1.5 to 2 liters water/thee a day. Water prevents constipation. When you don’t drink enough, your body tries to squeeze out the water of the foods. The food stored in your digestive tract gets sucked out until the last drop. All those sucked out foodstuffs cause obstipation; something you want to prevent if you don’t want to feel bloated ;).

3. Eat enough Fiber.

Fibers are like food for your intestines. They promote bowel movements and therefore keep your excrement flowing. Important sources of fibers are; fruit, legumes, grains, nuts, and vegetables. Now ask yourself, how can increase your fiber intake today?

4. Tame your stress.

Stress can have adverse effects on your body. One of them is; a blown up belly. To tame your stress is not one of the first things you would think of when you`re dealing with a blown up belly. When you experience stress, your body focusses on your stomach which disbalances the hormone system. This makes it harder for your body to digest your food, which results in gas accumulation and therefore a blown up belly.

5. Lower your sugar intake.

Fructose is hard to digest for many of us. Small amounts are ok, but nowadays most of us consume too large amounts of sugar (yeap, you probably too ;)). Microorganisms that live in your intestines convert sugars to poisonous gasses. When this occurs in small amounts, it´s no problem. However, when you overeat sugar, the poisonous gasses accumulate and can make you feel bloated.

6. Practise yoga

When the damage is already done and thus you already feel bloated, do some yoga. Yoga stimulates the digestion and offers the oh so nice stretches your body needs. Need some inspiration? Car and I LOVE the videos of Boho Beautiful. Check this video when you want to divorce your food baby.
