Community | The number one thing that helped me achieve my weight loss goal

15 May 2018

03-01-2018. I made the commitment to train for the half marathon which would take place in The Hague, March. It would be a far cry from the truth to tell you that I felt motivated the whole journey and that is has been easy for me. It wasn’t always easy, but there was one thing that made the road a lot easier, and especially more fun. As you can guess by the title, that one thing, was having a community. Read more if you want to find out how to create one, and why it will help you immensely in your weight loss journey.

‘’Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.” — Jane Howard, Margaret Mead

Rainy days…

I remember the day(s) I didn’t want to get out of bed, like yesterday. The days were mostly rainy and cold. Why would I push myself? The world would survive if I wouldn’t run the marathon, right? In the end, I always found enough motivation to do it. My ego would like to tell you it was because of my brilliant willpower and motivation. BUT, since I don’t want to lie to you, I will tell you the truth. It was because of my community that I found strenght and motivation. I didn’t only commit to run the marathon to myself; I made the commitment to my community, too. We all made the same commitment. We pushed each other, motivated each other and cheered each other up. I promise you that I couldn’t have done it without those close friends (thank you girls!!). After this experience, I had the profound realization that I can’t do things alone. I need a community, people who love me and support me – and so do you.

Why a community is so important

The right community is like a key to unlock your potential. When you hit a slump and feel like you can’t break out, a community can help you to see things from a different perspective. Whereas you normally would quit, your community sees your potential and can give you that extra push you need. When you have the right people around you, they will try to help you to make the best of your situation – to get the most out of it. They see how you can evolve even if you can’t see it yet.

How to pick your community

‘’You become the average of the five people you hang out with’’ – Drew Houston

If you like it or not, the people around you influence you and your behavior more than you think they do. Hang out with people who like to fill their Sundays watching SpongeBob Squarepants with an XL bag of chips in their lap, and you will miraculously find yourself like that one day, too. Choose your community carefully. Choose people who motivate you, who bring out the best in you. Preferably, choose for people who are further ahead than you are.

‘’If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room’’ – Marissa Meyer

This is also true for your weight loss journey. Are you the one who is the most motivated, disciplined and ahead in terms of living a healthy lifestyle? Find another community. As mentioned before; you become the average of the five people you hang out with. You want to keep growing and evolving. To be able to do this you need to hang out with people who inspire you, not with people who admire you for your results and believe you are ‘already there.’
